K-Beauty Shopping at Olive Young in 30 Minutes

Maya, who appears in this article, is a fictional character inspired by an American traveling in Korea.

Rather than recommending any particular cosmetic product, this article offers a realistic look at how a traveler can browse and choose products at one of Korea’s best-known health-and-beauty stores.

One afternoon in Seoul, with 30 minutes left before her next appointment, Maya stepped into a nearby Olive Young.

The store was packed not only with skincare and makeup, but also hair products, sheet masks, beauty tools, and health products. At first, Maya felt as though she needed to look at every display. Then she checked her phone and decided to give herself 30 minutes to browse and buy what she needed.

Her goal was not to fill her basket with whatever was trending, but to calmly choose just a few products that matched her own skin concerns.

Start by choosing one skin concern

Maya did not head straight for the popular-products section. First, she narrowed her search to three things.

• Hydration for dryness

• Soothing for irritated skin

• Sun Care for daily use

Store layouts vary by Olive Young location, but products are generally grouped into categories such as cleansing, toners and pads, serums, creams, sheet masks, sun care, and makeup. Larger stores also make it easy to find bestseller displays or recommendations organized by skin concern.

If acne or excess oil is your concern, start with the words Trouble Care. For dryness, look for Moisture; for sensitivity, look for Soothing or Barrier. Starting with these labels can save time.

Instead of comparing every ingredient and trending product one by one, Maya decided to think first about what her skin actually needed. Once she chose one concern to focus on, the crowded shelves began to feel much easier to navigate.

Begin with the product categories popular among U.S. shoppers

As Maya chose Korean cosmetics for the first time, she also looked at which products were most popular. Surprisingly, the items that stood out were not products promising highly specialized effects, but basic skincare products designed for everyday use.

Olive Young US bestsellers also tend to include products people use consistently in daily life, such as sunscreens, sun serums, toner pads, hydrating serums, soothing creams, sheet masks, and cleansers. Maya began to feel that the appeal of Korean cosmetics lay less in one flashy product than in the wide range of choices that support an everyday skincare routine.

The representative brands and product categories shown on the July 2026 bestseller page included the following.

• SKIN1004 · ROUND LAB: moisturizing sun care

• MEDIHEAL: toner pads and sheet masks

• Torriden · Anua: hydrating serums, toners, and cleansers

• Dr.G · Dr.Althea: soothing and skin-barrier creams

• beplain · ROUND LAB: daily cleansers

• UNOVE: treatments and hair oils for damaged hair

• fwee · lilybyred: lip gloss and cheek makeup

A bestseller is not automatically right for every skin type. Maya turned each product over to check whether it contained fragrance and how it should be used, and she removed anything from her basket if she already owned a similar product.

Color cosmetics can also look very different depending on skin tone. Rather than relying only on model photos on a screen, Maya decided to check the actual testers.

Use testers to see whether a product suits your skin

When Maya reached the makeup section, she swatched small amounts of lip products and blush on the back of her hand.

Testers are useful for checking color and texture, but because many people use them, it is better to test them on the back of your hand rather than applying them directly to your lips or around your eyes.

Use a fresh disposable applicator when one is available, and after testing, wipe the product off with the tissues or cleanser provided in the store.

Maya checked three things.

• Whether the shade looked natural with her skin tone

• Whether the texture felt too sticky or the fragrance too strong

• Whether she still liked the color and texture a few minutes later

Shade ranges for cushions and foundations vary considerably by brand.

If it is difficult to find a good match, a practical alternative is to avoid forcing a choice and look instead at lip, cheek, or eye products—or at skincare, which is less affected by skin tone.

Maya noticed that the lip color she had swatched on her hand became slightly more vivid as time passed.

Instead of buying it immediately, she continued browsing slowly and watched how the color developed.

Choose only as many sheet masks and value sets as you need

Maya paused in front of the sheet-mask section.

There were far more options than she had expected.

Products were organized by goals such as hydration, soothing, firmness, and glow, and ranged from individual masks to multipacks. Maya found it interesting that even the choice of a sheet mask could change depending on a person’s skin concern.

“They all look good, which somehow makes choosing just one even harder.”

With that thought, Maya took her time looking through the products.

On Olive Young US, which serves U.S. consumers, masks and pad products from brands such as MEDIHEAL and Torriden also continue to be popular with international shoppers.

Still, Maya did not put every eye-catching product into her basket. She had to think about space in her suitcase, and she realized that the point was not to buy a lot, but to choose products she would actually need.

She selected a few soothing masks for days when her skin felt tired and a small hydrating product. A Special Set with free gifts caught her eye, but she thought, “What I can actually use matters more than what simply looks like a good deal.”

For Maya, shopping at Olive Young became more than a chance to buy cosmetics. It was also an experience that helped her understand her own skin a little better.

Bring your passport and check the tax-refund option

Just before paying, Maya asked the employee a short question.

“Tax refund available?”

Tax refunds for international tourists in Korea are not applied automatically at every store. Check whether the store displays a tax-refund sign and, when available, present your physical passport before payment to be safe.

Under the current official tourism guidance, a purchase of at least KRW 15,000 at one store is required to apply for a tax refund. For an immediate tax refund, a single transaction must be under KRW 1,000,000, and the total value of immediate-refund purchases during the trip must not exceed KRW 5,000,000. When the conditions are met, the tax can be deducted at checkout. With a standard refund, you receive a separate refund slip and complete the process when leaving Korea.

Not every Olive Young location offers the same refund method, so Maya checked with the employee before paying. The Korea Tourism Organization’s guidance on immediate tax refunds at Olive Young has also advised travelers to present their physical passport before payment.

Thirty minutes later: Maya’s basket

When the timer went off, Maya had four items in her basket.

• Moisturizing sun care

• A soothing serum

• Travel-friendly sheet masks

• A lip product that suited her after she checked the shade on her hand

She had not bought much, but everything she chose could be used regularly even after the trip. Maya realized that Olive Young was not simply a tourist shopping stop filled with famous cosmetics. It was an everyday store where people in Korea also bought cleansers and sunscreen, compared sale items, and picked up the personal-care products they needed.

At first, the sheer number of products made it hard to know what to choose. Once she set a few simple criteria, however, the process was easier than she expected.

Choose one skin concern, look only at the product categories you need, check testers, and ask about the tax refund before paying.

For Maya, 30 minutes of K-beauty shopping was not about copying the latest trends.

It was time spent finding products that suited her skin among countless choices—and discovering the pleasure of choosing cosmetics with a few clear standards of her own.
